Neon

Neon Signs

Neon has been for several generations an extremely effective type of sign, and has recently enjoyed a huge resurgence in popularity. Neon offers a unique eye-catching brilliance, wide range of colors and special effects, long-life, and adaptability to many practical and artistic uses. At Sign-GrafX, we design, assemble, install and repair all types of neon, including architectural units, window displays, bar/beer drops, exposed and contained lettering (channel lettering), and indoor and outdoor displays.

Neon has unique advantages. It also has some limitations and risks. Neon is composed of gas in fragile glass tubes. Not only is the glass itself dangerous, but the gases often contain mercury and other toxic materials. On top of this, neon is powered by a high voltage electric current, a potential source of electric shock and a fire hazard. Proper design, assembly, installation, wiring and service are critical to your physical safety, the survival of your building, and the life of the neon sign itself. Please, NEVER, EVER get near a neon sign or any of its power supply or wiring unless you are certain how to handle it and protect yourself. We have seen and serviced many neon signs (often done by other "professionals?") that were both illegal and highly dangerous.

Regulations, building codes and U/L standards affecting neon have tightened up a lot recently, and many older installations are now obsolete, illegal or burned-out and dangerous. Please respect neon for what it is, and don't think you can cut corners on materials or installation, even if you think you are totally trained and qualified.

Neon, particularly custom neon, is expensive to make, install and service. You can expect to pay at least $400 for a simple custom window unit. The science of neon is fairly old, but the technology is changing, with new, improved, safer, smaller, lighter-weight components introduced every year. In recent years, LED (light-emitting diode) lighting has become a popular and safer alternative to neon for enclosed signs and some other applications. We will advise you about - and use whenever possible - only the best, most reliable materials and parts available
